My spin on the night of Al Gores "Truth"
I won tickets from a talk radio station to see Al Gore's "The Awful Truth", no wait that's the Michael Moore TV show. Al's movie is called "An Inconvenient Truth", it's a documentary about what a great guy Al Gore is and how close he came to becoming president, -- and Global Warming. I'm not kidding about 50% of the movie is like watching a bad political advertisement. The only cool thing about that was, it was comedy relief for me and quiet a few people around me. I really tried not to be a closed minded right wing extremist snickering and laughing at inappropriate times, but I couldn't help my self.
At one point during an "Al Gore is great" break, we learn of Al's son who was in a traffic accident and was seriously hurt, perhaps this was supposed to tie together our necessity of stewarding the earth for our future generations, but-the creepy thing was that Al showed us actual photos of him at his sons bedside holding his hand in the hospital- all professionally shot in black and white and perfectly staged complete with Al wearing a SUTE AND TIE!!! This kind of pathetic self aggrandizement went on throughout the whole movie.
As for the rest of the movie, there were tons of anecdotal evidence photos of glaciers then and now, lakes then and now and so on.
After The Movie
The best part of the night came after the movie was over. Most of the audience had left by that point, except about 40 or 50 of your hardcore Birkenstock liberals and me and some guy that wore a shirt that said "I just had my cat neutered and now he's a liberal". It was question and answer time with a professor from the University of Minnesota, I forget if he was a climatologist or meteorologist, but he was definitely drinking the purple Koo-Aid. The professor started out with his comments about what he thought about the movie, he said something like, -- he liked it but from a scientific perspective that the science in the movie wasn't as good as he would have liked to see it. He went on to say that the emotional feelings he got from it was more important. Most of the questions from the audience were really confirmation statements about how great it was to finally see something like this in the mass media. Green Peace was there, and other groups one called "Carbon Neutral", what ever that is, I think it means "lefty-nut-bag". One of the ladies in the audience brought to everyone's attention that the professor will be on NPR tomorrow and hoped that he would tell the radio audience what a great movie he thought it was. I shouted to the professor "I don't suppose your going to tell them about how the science in the movie is not up to par"? The professor replied something like, .. Well I will only have five minutes, and I just don't think I could spend the time It would take,.. something --something. The dude with the cat shirt got hold of the microphone and asked about the cyclical nature of the ice core temperature on Al Gore's scientific chart, and the correlation between the increased global temperature on Mars, and he was immediately booed and laughed and ridiculed by the audience. The professor's answer was he didn't know about such temperature changes on mars and basically dismissed the question. Later the professor said how happy he was that the faith based movement was taking an interest in the global warming crisis, FAITH BASED GROUPS!!! I kept raising my hand for the microphone but never got a chance; I fell back on shouting questions at the professor.
The scary thing about the professor was that this was not just a high school or middle school teacher with a passing interest in the field, he was supposed to be a top notch professor from a top notch state university.
The bottom line is: I got a cool movie poster, some cool dog tag necklaces (that were handed out after everything) that say "I SAW THE TRUTH - AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH", and I lost all respect for a university professor.
